Methadone is a specially controlled substance used in the treatment of people who use opioids, such as opium and heroin. It helps reduce drug cravings and supports individuals who wish to stop using drugs but are not yet able to do so completely.
Methadone treatment is provided under the supervision of a physician and is taken orally. Methadone is well absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and is taken once daily, with effects lasting up to 24 hours. This helps people who use drugs reduce their opioid use gradually and ultimately stop using drugs.
In Chiang Rai Province, the color and flavor of methadone may vary between hospitals due to different preparation methods. People who use drugs can access methadone treatment free of charge at public hospitals under the national health insurance scheme.

Khon Khon for Change Foundation participates in the treatment of people who use drugs by providing community-based methadone services. The Foundation has established Community Health Service Centers (Drop-in Centers) in accordance with Healthcare Accreditation (HA) standards of its main hospitals, namely Mae Fah Luang Hospital and Mae Chan Hospital.
Service standards are assessed in terms of personnel, service provision, buildings and facilities, control of medication dispensing, and materials and equipment. This has resulted in confidence among government agencies and communities in the role of the Foundation and civil society organizations that provide services in collaboration with government agencies.
This collaboration helps reduce the workload of hospitals and strengthens existing public health services. Staff from civil society organizations act as intermediaries in communication between people receiving treatment and doctors and nurses, help monitor the safe use of methadone, ensure continued participation in the treatment system, support changes in substance use behavior, and improve the quality of life of people receiving treatment.
Community-based methadone services provided by staff of Khon Khon for Change Foundation are currently available at six locations, as follows:
Community Health Center (Drop-in Center), Ban Santikhiri, Mae Salong Nok Subdistrict, Mae Fah Luang District
